Welcome to Maesgwyn School
It is a pleasure to present you with our school website. I hope it will provide you with an insight into what Maesgwyn has to offer. Maesgwyn is a school for children with moderate learning difficulties. We currently have 100 pupils on role divided into 8 classes. Ages are between eleven and nineteen.
Pupils come to us, having been assessed by the educational psychologist. We have children from Cynon, Rhondda and Taff Ely districts. Following the psychologist’s assessment, children considered for Maesgwyn are placed on a waiting list. Each term there is an admissions panel, when the district educational psychologists and the Headteacher discuss individual children’s needs, and a list of priorities is drawn up.
Parents and children are invited to visit the school as soon as possible to consider a placement at Maesgwyn School.
The school itself is a single storey building, set on a hillside near Aberdare; all classrooms are spacious with large windows. We have a large hall / gymnasium, where assemblies are held and P. E. is taught. We have a well-equipped information technology room, food technology room and design technology room.
Outside we are fortunate enough to have a football pitch, a large flat playground and pleasant school grounds. Since September 2008 we have had the use of some new facilities to improve the educational opportunities for our pupils. These include a Skill Centre for teaching construction and motor vehicle skills, a greenhouse for horticulture and an area for the teaching of painting and decorating skills. We are also introducing welding, as well as building go-karts from scratch! These activities are part of our Learning Pathways activities for 14-19 year old and complete our vocational curriculum.
We place great emphasis on the welfare of individuals and the development of skills to help support them post school life.
As a caring school we look forward to welcoming you to Maesgwyn.
